About
Music finance happens in the dark.
mμ exists to change that.
Why mμ
Music catalogs change hands for hundreds of millions of dollars, yet the
market they trade in has no shared view of price. Deals close privately,
terms rarely surface, and the comparables are never published in one
place. Catalogs are still priced by rule-of-thumb multiples, so buyers and
rightsholders often sit down at the table without a common benchmark.
mμ brings that market into the open: a public benchmark for the music
asset class, the deals and news that move it, and valuations built from how
music is actually consumed.
What we do
Measure the market
The mμ 500 is a market-cap weighted benchmark for the music asset class, so there is a level to measure a catalog against.
Follow the money
Market news, read against the catalogs it moves, and a trade tape of catalog sales, acquisitions, and rights deals.
Value your music
Every track priced with a discounted cash flow model built on observed streaming history — not a rule-of-thumb multiple.
How the mμ Index works
The mμ Index sits where three established pieces of work overlap:
decay curves, multiples, and discounted cash flow. None is new on its
own. The index is what you get when they’re made to agree.
Decay curves
This is what our team does every day: study how each recording’s listening rises, slides, and settles, across the whole catalog, and forecast forward from those historical patterns.
Multiples
We built a way to measure multiples across the whole market, not just one deal at a time. That is what makes a real industry benchmark possible: a multiple read against the market, not a number an analyst picks for one asset.
Discounted cash flow
This is the scaffolding that lets anyone forecast future cash and price it today from what they know. Its biggest input is the trend — the belief about future growth — and that belief belongs to the buyer or seller, not to the model. Move it yourself in our valuation report.
Who it’s for
Investors and rightsholders — the people on every side of the table.
Whether you’re pricing an acquisition or deciding what your own
catalog is worth, mμ shows the work: the data, the assumptions, and how
far the answer moves when you disagree with them. Our
valuation reports walk through it end to end.
